Former Vice President’s Son Accused of Theft of Property

Monrovia – The Monrovia City Court Judge J. Kennedy Peabody has summoned the son of former Vice President Joseph N. Boakai, Joseph Boakai Jr. to appear before the court on Tuesday, July 10, to answer to the alleged crime of theft of property.

Judge Peabody writ of summons came in the wake of a complaint filed in by the Star Oil Company through its authorized officer (plaintiff).

The firm is accusing the former vice president son of allegedly confiscating a vehicle belonging to the company.

“Defendant is hereby ordered to appear in court on Tuesday, the 10th day of July, A.D. 2018, at the precise hour of 9:00 am to answer to the charge levied against him by and thru the Republic of Liberia thru Star Oil Company, plaintiff,” reads the Writ of Summon.

According to the Writ of Summon issued on Tuesday, July 3, in 2017 defendant Joseph Boakai Jr. received a Toyota Tundra 2015 model worth USD$140,000 from the Star Oil Company for rent.

The writ added that out of deception the defendant concealed the vehicle for personal use.

The Writ further added that the alleged act perpetrated by the defendant with the intent to deprive the company of its property contravene section 15.51of the revised penal law of Liberia.

The writ termed the alleged act of the defendant as “being unlawful, wicked, illegal, criminal and intentional, ” adding that his allege action is in violation of section 15.51 of the new Penal Law of Liberia.

Section 15.51 of the revised penal law of Liberia states: “A person is guilty of theft if he knowingly takes, misappropriates, converts or exercises unauthorized control over, or makes an unauthorized transfer of an interest in, the property of another with the purpose of depriving the owner thereof or if he knowingly obtains the property of another by deception or by threat with the purpose of depriving the owner thereof.”
