Cairo, Egypt – President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has scored high marks and received commendation for her extraordinary leadership role in the formulation of the Sustainable Development Agenda.
According to a dispatch from Cairo, the high marks and commendations were recorded at the second Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development organized by the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), which opened in Cairo, Egypt on May 17 and runs through May 19.
he conference, which brought together some 52 African countries, seeks to examine the correlation between Agenda-2030 developed by the United Nations and adopted by all Member States in September 2015 and the Africa Agenda 2063-Agenda that was also developed by the African Union.
Performing the opening ceremony, Dr. Anthony Maruping Economic Commissioner for the African Union (AU) as well as Ambassador Macharia Kamau, Kenya Permanent Representative to the UN and co-facilitator of the inter-governmental negotiations on SDGs and other speakers praised the extraordinary leadership of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf not only for her role on the UN High Level Panel but also as chair of the African Union Committee on the Post-2015, both of which served as the backbone of the new global development.
At the Cairo gathering, speakers after speaker said that the Common African Position was essential in the framing of the Agenda 2030.
The Ministers of Finance and Development Planning as Ministers-in-Charges of climate change will ensure that Goal 11 is exhaustively discussed in order to align it with Agenda 2030 and Agenda 2963.
The Cairo meeting will also critically discuss the inclusion of domestication in the new development agenda.
Liberia is represented by Deputy Minister of Finance for Budget & Development Planning, Hon. Tanner Bronson and EPA Deputy Director Urias Sunday Goll and Dr. Abdoulaye Dukule as Special Guest of the UNECA.
African countries are expected to compare notes on their approaches and strategies for creating a synergy between the various development goals.
The private sector, civil society organizations, local and international NGOS participating in the forum, have all underscored the need to strengthen partnership between all stakeholders in the development process.
The host country Egypt was elected President while Liberia was elected First Vice President for Africa representing West Africa on Sustainable Development Agenda.
