MONROVIA — As Liberia prepares for a demanding away assignment against Rwanda in the opening match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, experienced defender Jamal Arago is approaching the encounter with a clear understanding of what wearing the national colors represents.

The Lone Star will face Rwanda on Friday, September 25, at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, with the Group K opener scheduled for 4:00 p.m. GMT. CAF has confirmed that Rwanda and Liberia are among the teams beginning their Group K campaign this week, with Mali hosting Cape Verde in the group’s other fixture.
Speaking to FrontPage Africa from Rwanda, Arago said Friday’s encounter is more than another international fixture. It represents another opportunity to serve his country.
The experience defender, who operates at both left-back and center-back, has returned to the national team setup under new head coach Mohammed Adil Erradi.
He brings extensive international and club experience to a Lone Star defense entering a new competitive cycle.
Arago was included in Liberia’s 25-man squad for the September qualifiers against Rwanda and Mali and was among the overseas-based players who arrived in Kigali with the Lone Star delegation on Monday.
A Return to the Lone Star
Arago’s return to the national setup under Erradi has been one of the notable developments surrounding Liberia’s preparations for the new AFCON qualifying campaign.
When Erradi first named his squad in June, Arago was recalled after previously featuring for Liberia in the 2023 AFCON qualifying campaign.

That commitment remains central to his international journey. Now back in a competitive Lone Star squad, Arago faces the responsibility of helping Liberia navigate a challenging qualifying group.

Arago’s value to Liberia extends beyond his defensive capabilities. His tactical versatility gives the technical staff crucial depth in a backline that combines established professionals with emerging talent.
He joins a defensive unit featuring Sampson Dweh, Emmanuel Fully, Sebastien Teclar, George Wallace, and Philip Tarnue.
International statistics show that Arago has accumulated vital appearances in both World Cup and AFCON qualifiers for Liberia, including campaigns during the 2022 World Cup qualifiers and three AFCON qualifying matches in 2023.

Born in Accra, Ghana, Arago opted to represent Liberia internationally and has consistently reaffirmed his desire to build a lasting legacy with the Lone Star.
“Every time I put on the red, white, and blue, I am representing more than just myself or my club,” Arago told FrontPage Africa. “I am representing Liberian supporters at home and abroad, as well as my teammates who have traveled from around the world to unite as one team.”
On Friday, he will do so in a hostile away environment where host nation Rwanda will enjoy full home support.
A Difficult Kigali Assignment
Liberia’s challenge in Kigali cannot be understated. Host coach Stephen Constantine has publicly declared that his immediate focus is secured on Liberia, confirming that the Amavubi (the Wasps) intend to start their campaign with a decisive home victory.
Meanwhile, Coach Erradi is preparing for his first competitive match at the helm of Liberia.
The Kigali encounter therefore carries significant strategic weight for both camps.
For Liberia, the objective is to launch the qualification campaign with a positive result to build momentum for upcoming fixtures.
For Arago and the defense, that task starts with limiting Rwanda’s chances and frustrating their attack early on.
The Lone Star delegation arrived in Kigali on Monday with Arago among the traveling delegation , and the team has since conducted tactical sessions ahead of Friday’s clash.
