Monrovia – The political leader of the Alternative National Congress (ANC) Alexander Cummings has reasured his comittment to protect the rights of women in Liberia.

At the launch of the Women in Peacebuilding Network (WIPNET) in collaboration with the Balawala International Foundation (BIF) 16 Days awareness on the domestic violence and early child marriage Thurday, the ANC political leader priased WIPNET for the contribution they made over the years, adding that they remain the backbone of the country.
“Everything you have done, the sacrifies you have made for Liberia, we cannot pay back for the sacrificies you made for this country,” the ANC political leader said.
Cummings: “From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you for what you have done for this country we called Liberia.”
The 16 Days of Activism which began November 25 is geared promoting awareness to curb domestic violence and end child marriage.
Pointing to his wife, the ANC political leader said, “We’ve been marriage for 35 years and she was not 15 when I married her.
“Gender-based violence is not part of our culture as Liberians and it is not good for our country.”
For her part, the Head of Advocacies of WIPNET Bernice Freeman said with the many weakeness pepertrated against women during the war they (the WIPNET) continue to pray for peace in the country.
Although the country is having a relative peace, she added that more needed to be done in preventing domestic violence and ending child marriage.
“This is Liberia where is the justice system for us to go to court? We do not have money, now rape is on the rise,” she added.
Director of Balawala International Foundation Kerkula Kamara whose organization was involved in the disarmament process after the war said, the organization was active in the fight against domestic violence and the end of child marriage in the country.
The Director of BIF also promised to take the 16 Days of Activism awareness to every village and town in the country.
