Monrovia – The President of the Republic of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has honored BRAC Liberia by making the organization a Knight Official of the Liberian Humane Order of African Redemption. The award was given at the C. Cecil Dennis, Jr. Auditorium in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia.
BRAC Liberia was represented by Country Representative Mainuddin Ahmed and three other staff members who received the award from the President of Liberia on July 25, 2017 in observance of the 170th Independence Day celebrations of the Republic of Liberia.
The President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, wished to recognize and publicly appreciate BRAC Liberia’s invaluable contributions to socio-economic development of Liberia through its sponsorship of multi-sectorial programs, which have spurred economic recovery and growth over the past ten years.
During the ceremony, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, who is also Grand Master of the Orders of Distinction of the Republic of Liberia, admitted BRAC into the Humane Order of African Redemption and conferred upon it the Grade of ‘Knight Official’ in consideration of the enormous contributions BRAC has made to poverty alleviation among the people of Liberia.
The Humane Order of African Redemption was founded in 1879, during the presidency of Anthony W. Gardiner.
It is awarded for humanitarian work in Liberia, for acts supporting and assisting the Liberian nation and to individuals who have played a prominent role in the pursuit of equal rights.
Six individuals and three other organizations were recognized in the same ceremony on the 25th July for their invaluable support to the development agenda of Liberia overthe last ten years.
The President also honored other selected partners like African Development Bank, Last Mile Health, and President’s Young Professional Program (PYPP) during the ceremony.
Before formally accepting BRAC into the ranks of the Humane Order of African Redemption, the Chief Protocol Officer readout a citation on behalf of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
The citation included several details on BRAC Liberia’s history and successes.
Since BRAC arrived in Liberia in 2008, it has strived to live up to its vision: a world free from all forms of exploitation and discrimination where everyone has the opportunity to realize their potential.
Its mission is to empower people and communities in situations of poverty, illiteracy, disease and social injustice.
BRAC is currently working in ten of the fifteen counties of Liberia, running programs in Microfinance, Health, Livelihoods and Food Security, and Education with different integrated approaches.
These approaches directly touched the lives of more than 300,000 poor Liberians in 2016 alone.
Based upon its successful pursuit of its goals, BRAC Liberia has received several awards from various institutions.
Institutions that have recognized BRAC as an ‘Outstanding NGO in Liberia include the Society for the Promotion of Peace, National Reconciliation and Reunification in Liberia in 2011; the X-Ray Newspaper in 2012; Royal Communication Inc. in 2014; and Africa Watch Newspaper in 2016.
