Monrovia – The Minister of Agriculture (MoA), Dr. Mogana S. Flomo, who on June 28, 2018 paid a one-day official visit at BRAC Liberia, poultry and hatchery and feed mill in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County has vowed to work together with the international facet BRAC in ending hunger and improving food insecurities.
Minister Flomo, who together with BRAC country team, went on a guided tour of the farm made the pronouncement due to his own level of appreciation what he saw on the firsthand visit including the poultry hatchery and feed mill, there production in day-old chicks (DOC), feeds, eggs and others.
He then lauded the BRAC’s team for their engagement, which of course, is yielding some level of growth for the Liberian economy, noting, “BRAC Liberia activities in the country are highly contributing to the human capacity building, jobs creation for Liberians, as well as bringing changes in the agriculture sector of the country”.
Minister Flomo, however, said: “I am so impressed to see what you are doing, by contributing towards the nation’s freedom from food insecurities, which contributes to poverty alleviation and enhancement to a viable economy.”
He then promised the BRAC Liberia country team, by and through its Country Representative, Mr. Mainuddin Ahmed, of his institution’s willingness to work closely together in fight against food insecurity, including ending hunger and malnutrition in Liberia.
In response, BRAC’s Country Representative spoke of BRAC being proud to work towards alleviating poverty, and ending exploitation and discrimination of all forms in Liberia.
He added, “BRAC proudly promotes diversification and capacity development, which of course has resulted in the placement of more Liberians, in senior management positions within our organization.”
Mr. Ahmed informed Minister Flomo of their willingness to visit Poultry Hatchery and Feed Mill. BRAC became the first non-governmental organization to establish a Poultry Hatchery and Feed Mill in Liberia since 2014. Poultry Hatchery and Feed Mill are contributing in reducing malnutrition, creating employment and generating income through producing and supplying Day-Old-Chicks, poultry feed and fresh eggs. We are distributing Day Old Chick (DOC) and poultry feed among the project beneficiaries as project support and also selling it to the commercial farmers.
According to him, the European Union supported project under the name: Pro–ACT 2015 which strives to improve nutrition situation, promote sustainable agriculture by developing resilient agricultural techniques and practices, and of course build resilient markets and resilient people who are able to generate diverse livelihoods seeking to provide stable incomes and adequate food and nutrition in the face of recurrent stresses and stocks in the country. Total beneficiaries of this project is 7,500 including vulnerable and smallholder farmers, community-based service promoters, entrepreneurs, market actors, community-based organization etc.
The BRAC Liberia Country Representative, however, welcomed the initiative spoken about by the Minister, for whichever that will help bring about improvement to the living conditions of Liberians, as he thanked the Minister and team for the pleasant visit.
