Monrovia – The University of Liberia (UL) has refuted a claim on social media, linking its administration to a purported increase of tuition to US$7.00 per credit hour.

The UL has been running on a tuition-free basis since the announcement of free tuition was made by former President George Manneh Weah in 2019.
Though the policy has not been officially enacted into law, as some lawmakers at the Capitol are proposing, it remained effective all through the Weah administration.
However, on Wednesday, January 31, the entire student community’s attention was drawn to a phony news about tuition payment that took over social media.
A Facebook account under the inscription, OgaTitus for Weah posted, claiming, “Breaking News!
Seven dollars per credit hour a UL. The rescue mission is here.
RIP Tuition-Free Policy for all public universities and colleges, hehehehe.”
However, UL in a release signed by its Vice President for Public Affairs, Cllr. Norris Tweah, noted that the state-run institution was concerned about the information circulating on social media by unauthorized individuals.
According to the release, the act by these individuals is intended to mislead the students and the public by announcing a purported increase of tuition to US$7.00 per credit hour.
The university has since termed the information as false, stating that there is no decision reached by the UL Administration to charge students US$7.00 per credit hour for academic programs at the University.
The UL Administration, meanwhile, encouraged students, staff, and the public to remain calm and only subscribe to official information regarding academic activities which are always communicated through its various platforms as well as on public and private media outlets.
Additionally, the UL Administration calls on students, staff, and the public to remain steady as the Administration works to release a revised calendar for the resumption of classes for the pending second semester of the academic year 2022/2023.
Meanwhile, UL in its release urged everyone seeking official information to utilize the University’s website: https://ul.edu.lr/ or visit our Facebook page which is named “University of Liberia – UL,” and can be accessed via https://www.facebook.com/theuniversityofliberia
