Liberia: Election Commission Poised to Announce By-Election Date as Final Election Materials Arrive

MONROVIA – FrontPageAfrica has gathered that the long-awaited prepacked materials for the conduct of the by-elections in Montserrado County arrived in the country via the Roberts International Airport on Kenya Airways cargo flight on Thursday, July 18.

The county’s District 15 and Senatorial by-elections have been postponed twice due to the unavailability of the prepacked electoral materials.

Prior to the July 8 postponement, the by-election was set for July 2. However, the NEC Chairman, Cllr. Jerome Korkoya in a press conference informed the public that holding the July 2 would have been possible as they were expecting the prepacked kits by June 30. That did not materialize.

The prepacked electoral materials are used by the poll workers for the conduct of the by-elections.

FrontPageAfrica gathered the Board of Commissioners would shortly announce a new date for the by-election after inspecting the materials and conferring with political parties.

A full consignment of one million forty-six thousand, one hundred ballot papers are currently in the country. The ballot papers, including tactile ballot guides, forms, and record of the counts had been in the country for weeks at a secure location under the maximum protection of the Liberia National Police, NEC disclosed.

Of the total ballot papers, nine hundred and ninety-three thousand, eight hundred and fifty (993,850) will be used for the senatorial by-election, while fifty-two thousand, two hundred and fifty (52,250) will be used for the representative by-election.
