Monrovia – A multi-stakeholders’ meeting for the orientation of the new Liberia REACH Facilitator, Ms Kou Baawo and the Focal Point of the SUN Movement in the country, Mrs. Mameni Linga takes place today, February 1 in Monrovia.
REACH is the “Renewed Efforts against Child Hunger and Under-nutrition while SUN is the “Scaling Up Nutrition” (SUN). REACH is an inter-agency partnership between WFP, FAO, WHO, UNICEF, and IFAD and other UN agencies devoted to improving multi-sectoral nutrition governance. REACH is a country-led approach, funded by Irish Aid, addressing child undernutrition through the partnership and coordinated actions of UN agencies, civil society, donors, and the private sector, under the leadership of national governments.
The Government of Liberia through the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, Education, Commerce and Trade and Gender, Children and Social Protection together with civil society organizations and the United Nations in Liberia including the Office of the Resident Coordinator, WFP, FAO, WHO, UNICEF, UN Women and UNFPA are expected to attend.
During the gathering, stakeholders will hold consultations aimed at building consensus on the current status of nutrition governance, perceived gaps and potential activities that could be supported through REACH in 2019.
Ms. Hajra Hafeez-ur-Rehman, Programme and Liaison Officer at the REACH Secretariat based at WFP headquarters in Rome, Italy is in Liberia to lead the consultations. She said: “During this support mission, we hope that the work plans of REACH Facilitator and SUN Focal Point 2019 will be finalized and also that the government, UN agencies and partners will reach a consensus on key activities of SUN and REACH for year 2019,” among many other expected outcomes.
