County Meet Budget Reportedly Cut From US$500K – US$250K

Monrovia – FrontPageAfrica understands that the budget of the 2016/2017 national county sports meet has been considerably reduced.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, two members of the ways, means, finance and development planning and public accounts committees in the House of Representatives said the tournament’s budget was reduced from US$500,000 to US$250,000.

The National Legislature recently submitted the 2016/17 national fiscal budget of US$623 million to President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf to be signed into law.

The executive submitted a draft budget of US$555.9 million but additional revenues were realized during the budget hearing on Capitol Hill thereby forming an increase of about US$67.1million to be generated in the fiscal year, which has affected the budget allotments to some ministries and governmental agencies.

It the budget is signed into law, the hosting of this year’s tournament will be severely undermined with some counties, like Grand Kru, unable to raise additional resources.

When contacted, sports ministry officials were speechless but promised to speak when the budget becomes a law.

The county meet is organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and concerned federations and associations (like Liberia Football Association and Liberia Basketball Association).

We’ve assemble pay homage and bid final farewell to another fallen Liberian journalist, Professor James Kpateh Wolo, who departed this world on September 9, 2016, at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Medical Center in Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa.
