Accra – Ahead of the release of his Album “Above all Else”, Ghana-based Liberian rapper, Scientific has called for unity among Liberian artists if they want to see the light. “There’s too much hatred and envy amongst the artists and it has kept them stagnant,” he mentioned in an interview.
The Liberian rapper says the music game in the country is thriving but much more still needs to be done amid the abounding challenges the industry faces. “Artists in Liberia are talented; but because the industry is too small, they lack better studios and the outputs of the records are not up to standard. Unlike Ghanaian Artists who have an urge cos they got better equipment and many options—in terms of getting their music across and videos as well.”
“Liberian music has really progressed and taken a huge transformation cuz artists are working harder and pushing their songs out internationally and crossing borders touring and doing shows and the Liberian people are beginning to support their own and show interest in their music.”
According to Scientific, showcasing Liberian artistes to the world requires an investment in the industry plus a proper Liberian Music Awards that would be held in the country instead of the United States.
“Better videos have to be shown on MTV base, Channel O etc. from Liberian artiste and lots of Collaboration as well. But shout outs to my bro FA in Nigeria, making a huge impact and Deng too just to name a few.
Born Sonny Jamal Tubman, the rapper is the grandson of longest serving Liberian President, William V.S. Tubman, and has been in the music industry for the past 13 years.
A science head in high school, Scientific was always finding scientific meanings for his punch lines but a rap battle to test his lyrical prowess actually earned him the moniker.
“How I got the stage name Scientific has to do with me Studying Science in high School and I was always using Scientific meanings, but Reggie Rockstone who happens to be the originator of Hiplife in Ghana actually gave me that name right after we did a rap battle and tested our lyrical prowess”, he says.
Scientific would go on to open shows for Jay z ,Akon, Fabulous, Fat Joe and a freestyle battle with Wyclef Jean. “I would describe my music as hiphop but hipco is a bridge to that.”
With FA’s Desire trending as the #1 video on Sound City TV, Scientific believes it’s only a matter of time, coupled with support from Liberians for the industry to get to where it ought to be.
