Youth  Ministry Hosts FIBA Zone-3 Delegation to Boost Grassroots Basketball In Liberia

MONROVIA – The Ministry of Youth and Sports has welcomed a high-level basketball delegation to Liberia as part of ongoing efforts aimed at strengthening youth empowerment and promoting grassroots basketball development across the country.

The delegation, headed by Samuel Ahmedu, President of FIBA Zone-3, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Honorable Cornelia W. Kruah, on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at her office at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville, outside Monrovia.

The meeting centered on discussions surrounding the growth and development of grassroots basketball in Liberia, particularly among young athletes seeking opportunities for professional and international exposure.

Accompanying the delegation were Alex Nwora, head of the Jordan Nwora Foundation, and Liberian-born basketball coach Frederick Lymas, who currently coaches at Shawnee State University in the United States.

Speaking during the meeting, Minister Kruah expressed appreciation to the delegation for selecting Liberia as part of their youth basketball development initiative, describing the program as a major opportunity for aspiring young Liberian athletes.

“This initiative is not only about basketball development but also about inspiring hope, discipline, and opportunity among our young people. We are grateful to the Jordan Nwora Foundation, FIBA Zone-3, and all partners involved for investing in the future of Liberian youth,” Minister Kruah stated.

The Minister further emphasized the Government of Liberia’s commitment to supporting sports development programs that empower young people and create pathways for scholarships, international exposure, and career advancement.

She also pledged the Ministry’s continued collaboration with the Jordan Nwora Foundation and FIBA Zone-3 leadership to ensure talented Liberian athletes benefit from future mentorship opportunities and international basketball programs.

The visiting delegation is currently in Liberia to conduct a basketball clinic for young and grassroots athletes between the ages of 14 and 17.

The clinic, which began on Friday, May 8, and runs through Tuesday , May 12, 2026, is expected to provide participants with technical basketball training, mentorship, and exposure to international standards of the game.

Sports stakeholders say the initiative represents an important step toward strengthening grassroots basketball development in Liberia at a time when many young athletes are seeking opportunities abroad through sports.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports says it remains committed to working with national and international partners to promote youth empowerment, talent development, and sporting excellence across Liberia.
