Monrovia – Young Women Intellectual Forum has donated several assorted items to Women and children of Soniwein and Buzzy Quarter Communities in Central Monrovia.
The items including rice, soap and tissues amongst others, were distributed over the weekend as Christmas gifts to residents of the two slum communities.
The Young Women Intellectual Forum is a nonpolitical organization concerned about helping the needy.
The Executive Director of the group, Eva Remmie Dixon told reporters during the distribution that the assorted food and non-food materials was her organization’s way of making children and women happy during the Christmas celebration.
She noted that the organization had been engaged with such process since 2010, aimed at giving the less fortunate hope and by transforming the lives of young people mainly across Montserrado County.
Madam Dixon said the organization is committed to building the intellectual potential of Liberians, most especially young girls. She also stressed that teaching girls about giving to needy communities is necessary.
“The forum had provided opportunity to young women and girls to build their capacity as a means to prepare them to better equip themselves both academically and financially in order to contribute to the transformation of Liberia,” Dixon said
As part of its obligation, the forum’s executive director said, they have reached out to various communities and schools that are involved with intellectual discourse in Montserrado County
“As part of our community outreach, this program visited various communities and schools organizing forum for young women and girls to allow them develop public intellectual ability for discussion of vital issues that are affecting their progress in society,” Dixon said.
In addition to the distribution of the items, the group awarded three-year scholarships to 20 underprivileged women and girls of school going age.
Dixon recalled that during the 2011 elections, her group visited various communities educating residents about their rights to vote in the midst of economic hardship.
She emphasized the importance for young women to freely express themselves in the public.
She averred this will enable them become more informed about happenings in Liberia.
“The young women intellectual forum is formulating programs to cover rural Liberia as part of the organization decentralization plan,” she said.
Receiving the items, some of the beneficiaries expressed delight over the gesture.
According to the beneficiaries who spoke in separate statements, the gesture came at the time Liberians in slum communities like theirs are facing major economy constraints during the festal season.
They described the gift as a surprise and called on other humanitarians to emulate the kind-heartedness of the Young Women Intellectual Forum.
