The striker was unveiled to members of the club administration and technical staff on Monday, March 25, at the team’s stadium, Blue Field, in Central Monrovia.
Varney has been in the Seychelles playing for Lions FC, where he became fans’ favorite for his goals.
The ‘Go Blue Boys’ confirmed the signing of the former LISCR captain, who was sorted after by his former club and made it clear that his heart was far from the ‘Shipping Boys’ and only BYC he wanted to play for after years out of Liberia.
On March 22, 2019, BYC posted on their social media platform: “What a way to start the weekend.
We have completed the signing of Liberian international striker, Mohammed Varney.
He joins us on a one-year deal as a free agent. Varney brings lot of experience to us as former ‘Most Valuable Player’ and ‘highest goal scorer’ of the Liberian national league. #Welcome to the Barracks Mohammed V,” the statement said.
The Liberian champion further noted that Varney brings an unprecedented goal-scoring advantage to the club that is only equaled to their former Captain Van-Dave Harmon.
The “Go Blue Boys” unveiling now ends earlier statements from fans of their fierce league rival LISCR that Varney was returning to end what he started.
So, Mohammed, who won the LFA highest goal scorer and Most Valuable Player in 2013/2014 season, is set to become BYC’s highest paid player in recent history. By BYC’s tradition, financial terms aren’t disclosed during unveiling ceremony.
The experienced attacker played for Mighty Blue Angels before moving to the Shipping Boys where he made name for himself and also was a member of the local national team.
Varney is to team up-front with Trokon Myers, rising league star Ketu Jerbo, and Abdulai Bility, all of whom have extended long-termed deals with BYC.
Varney was quoted as saying, “After many weeks of reflection, talking to close friends, BYC was the club for me. Being able to wear the “Blue” of the club makes me proud. I can’t wait to represent BYC at Blue Field, which is the most difficult grounds. BYC has won a lot in Liberian football, so I want to be part of history.”
According to him, few years ago, BYC had tried to sign him, but his mind then was not at BYC.
The striker, who scored more than 10 goals a season, had been one of BYC’s CEO, Mr. Robert A. Sirleaf’s favorite players in the country. Finally capturing Varney, equals to winning the league in Mr. Sirleaf’s view.
The club president, Nathaniel Sherman, said signing the striker shows that BYC is ready to defend their title and retain it at the end of the 2019 league.
“As part of our program, we look for top quality players. Varney is a player we have been monitoring for some years and we are happy we finally reached agreement with him,” said Sherman .
The BYC boss noted that they are preparing their team for the Confederation of African Football Champions League and will add more quality and experienced players to the “Go Blue Boys”.
