Senator Darius Dillion Chairs Committee on Youth and Sports

MONROVIA – Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon has been appointed chairman of the Senate Committee on Youth and Sports succeeding Senator Conmany Wesseh whom he worked with as co-chair.

Accepting the appointment, Senator Dillion posted on his social media page: “We are humbled to accept our appointment as chairman of the Senate Committee on Youth and Sports.” He thanked the President Pro Tempore, Senator Albert T. Chie, for the confidence reposed in them to serve on this “very strategic and important” committee and give God the glory for grace, courage and wisdom to serve the people.

Outlining the committee’s oversight responsibilities, Senator Dillion indicated that this appointment brings the Ministry of Youth and Sports under his committee’s supervision that will help ensure the empowerment of the Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY), Liberia National Student Union (LINSU), Young Men Christian Association (YMCA) and all youth organizations having statutory fiduciary responsibilities and advocacy programs for effective youth development and participation.

The committee will also formulate and implement national policies and programs in the area of its oversight as well as any other matter referred by the President Pro-Tempore and leadership or the Senate’s Plenary.

The committee, within the scope of its oversight responsibilities, shall also conduct surveys, investigations, hearings, and debates as part of committee room activities for the purpose of distilling public and expert concerns, opinions and interests on matters requiring legislative actions.

It can be recalled that when President George Weah served as senator of Montserrado County, he served in the same position. As chairman of that committee and an opposition leader, then Senator Weah, at one point complained officials of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, then headed by Mr. Lenn Eugene Nagbe, to the Senate for their lack of cooperation.
