Monrovia – The National Elections Commission (NEC) has accredited two new political parties. The political parties are the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) and the Vision for Liberia Transformation (VOLT).
Speaking at the certification ceremony, the Chairman of the Commission, Cllr. Jerome Korkoya, noted that the accreditation of the two new parties shows that democracy is truly at work in the country because the people of Liberia are now freely exercising their freedom of association.
He urged the two new Political Parties to operate within the confines of the laws of the country and avoid pre-electoral campaigning ahead of the official period for political campaigning to be declared by the Commission.
The NEC Chairman said all registered political parties are also under obligation to promote electoral participation, including Civic and Voter Education in order to elicit increased participation of all citizens.
The accreditation of the two political parties is consistent with Article 79 of the Constitution of Liberia and Chapter 2 Sub-Chapters A and B of the Regulations and Guidelines Relating to Political Parties and Independent Candidates.
The certification ceremony was held at the James Fromayan Conference Hall at the Headquarters of the NEC in Monrovia. The certification of the proposed political parties brings to twenty-two the total number of registered political parties in the country.
