Physically Challenged in Rural Liberia Benefit From Wheel Chairs Donation

Monrovia – The Executive Director of the Florence A. Tolbert and Disable Advocate Incorporated, Mr. Samuel Dean, has brought into the country a consignment of whee lchairs, crutches, and brio books for the blind and other physically challenged in rural Liberia.

Mr. Dean who is also a disable said he is not pleased with the condition of his fellow underprivileged and physically challenged individuals throughout the country and has been using his organization, seeking assistance from bigger organizations to help the disable in Liberia.

Mr. Dean explained that his organization plans to distribute about 155 wheel chairs, but said he has brought into the country the first 30 pieces of wheel chairs, books for blind kids and crutches from partners to be donated to disables around the country beginning with three counties.

Those counties to first benefit from the donation include River Cess, Sinoe and Grand Kru. In an interview with FrontPageAfrica, Mr. Dean disclosed that the cost of the chairs is about US$55,000.

He explained that the chairs will help disable people to go to school ridding themselves, sell their market among others. He said his organization is involved in advocacy for disables.

During the distribution of the chairs in faraway counties, Mr. Dean said he will collaborate with the Union on Disable Organization and United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) Human Rights Department to transport the items to the rural areas.

He said the wheel-chairs are durable “as you can see these chairs help disables to go to school, for recreation purposes, and maybe go to the farm, as you can see there are lots of spaces on them and can even help to sell their markets and improve their livelihood,” he explained.

Mr. Dean however encouraged partners and stakeholders in various communities to help contribute in improving the lives of disables in Liberia.

He disclosed that the chairs were donated by the NGO, Personal Energy Transportation (PET) International to help improve the lives of disables in Liberia. He however praised Reverend Russia Glay and other donors that have been helping the disables in Liberia through the Florence A. Tolbert and the Disable Advocate Incorporated

The chairs being donated are different from the normal wheel chairs being used in Liberia by disables; it can easily be used by individuals themselves without the help of another person.
