Margibi County – At least 146 girls between the ages of 13 and 20 years have received sanitary pads in observance of the International Day of Menstrual Hygiene under the theme: “BLEED WITH PRIDE”.
The Menstrual Hygiene Day is an annual awareness day scheduled for May 28 each year that is celebrated worldwide. The day seeks to highlight the importance of good menstrual health management.
The sanitary pad is the first pad care campaign organized by Taking Actions for Girls (TAG-Liberia) in collaboration with Books Before Boys Inc.
Patience Koteah, Founder/ Executive Director of TAG-Liberia, urged the girls to properly take care of themselves and feel pride as menstruation is no shame and disgrace as was portrayed in the past.
She said there is a need to empower women and girls through all sector which supports and achieving 4 and 5 of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The program was held at the Kingsley Lington Academy, Cooper’s Farm on Wednesday, June 5, 2019.
TAG-Liberia is a non-profit organization run by a team of professional young and inspiring Liberian Women with the aim to prepare girls for sustained success in a changing business and professional landscape, hence promoting a healthy lifestyle.
It has worked through four thematic areas namely: Business and Entrepreneurship, Education (STEM), Health, Peace Building, and Conflict Resolution.
While Books Before Boys embodies an idea of Women empowerment and a commitment to the advancement of today’s girls and tomorrow’s mother through education as a basic human right.
Mr. Sabato Nuefville of the Kingsley Lington Academy appreciated the donation expressing interest in working along with both organizations in order to provide health education and other programs to enhance the leadership skills of girls in the school.
Norway Kolu Harris, Program Director- TAG-Liberia gave an overview of the International Day of Menstrual Hygiene.
She said if the barriers had not been broken, the world wouldn’t have selected a day to celebrate Menstruation.
Damaris Jackson, Public Relation Officer of Book Before Boys Inc. encouraged girls to embrace themselves and avoid been bother during their menses.
