From the onset of the crisis last year, Boakai’s administration has been accused of undermining Koffa’s leadership, particularly when the Executive failed to present the draft budget on time.
The budget was originally due on October 31, 2024 but was delayed after Boakai requested an extension until November 8, 2024, citing the Supreme Court’s denial of Koffa’s petition regarding the legality of parallel sessions within the House.
However, the President’s move was met with criticism, including from Senate Judiciary Chair, Senator Augustine Chea, who argued that Boakai’s delay in submitting the budget at the time undermined Koffa’s authority and the Constitution.
Critics also reported that Boakai had repeatedly pressured Koffa to resign in favor of electing a Speaker more aligned with his political preferences, a demand Koffa rejected.
Weah’s remarks were made during a meeting on March 25, 2025, with a high-level ECOWAS delegation at his office in Paynesville.
The discussions focused on the ongoing tensions in the National Legislature, with Weah condemning Boakai’s actions, accusing the administration of supporting lawless members of the House and undermining the rule of law.
He further stated that his decision to concede defeat and congratulate Boakai in the wake of the 2024 elections was aimed at safeguarding the nation’s peace and stability.
“The actions of the UP administration, including constitutional violations, pose a direct threat to the peace and security of Liberia,” Weah declared.
In response, the ECOWAS delegation, led by Ibrahim Gambari, former Nigerian Foreign Minister and former United Nations Under-Secretary General, reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring regional stability and supporting Liberia’s democratic institutions. The delegation pledged to work closely with Liberia to address the political tensions and help ensure the country’s peaceful progress.
