Monrovia – Money exchangers, petty traders and marketers in the Rehab Community outside Monrovia, have lauded President George Weah for fulfilling promise made to them.
President Weah erected a temporary structure that enables them to comfortably and safely conduct their business activities, while a market building is being constructed for petty traders and marketers.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, March 28, in the Rehab Community, the money exchangers said the President’s gesture to build the structure is in fulfillment of the campaign promise he made during the election.
“The Money Changers did not make any formal request to the President to build the structure.”
“The construction came as a big surprise at the time when we were worried about the impending rainy season,” Harris emphasized.
Usually, during the Rainy Season, we are always forced to leave ELWA Junction because of the lack of shelter; this has created problem for us to meet the needs of our customers,” said spokesman William Harris.
Harris appealed to President Weah to extend the gesture to other parts of the country where other money exchangers are encountering constraints to transact business in furtherance of his government’s pro-poor agenda.
Also, Rehab Community Market Superintendent, who only goes as Ma-Cecelia, termed as unprecedented President Weah’s decision to construct a new market structure for marketers and said he will always be remembered by all residents of the Rehab Community.
“I started selling here since 2005; we were really suffering under a damaged tent and we were praying to God for a good selling place; and today, God has answered our prayers for the President to start constructing a new building for us to sell our market”, Ma-Cecelia said.
“The President has started a great thing for us and we are happy and tell God thank you for him for the new market building for the Community.”
Amid a rising exchange rate between the Liberian and U.S. dollars, she craved President Weah’s intervention to address the problem, to enable them address challenges they are faced with.
“One thing that is causing hardship for us is the United States (US) dollar rate, it is causing us not to make profit; and we are experiencing problems in paying our children’s school fees because of that.”
Also adding her voice, Madam Ellen D. Mulbah appreciated the Liberian leader for erecting a new and durable market shelter for them.
The Liberian Leader undertook the initiative out of his own volition, in consideration of his promise and commitment to provide level-playing field for Liberian businesses in the economy of the country.
