Monrovia – Amid the upsurge in armed robbery activities across Monrovia and its environs, the Liberia National Police has arrested five suspects in connection to an early morning shootout between officers of Emergency Response Unit (ERU) of the Police and the alleged robbers in the Wood Camp community of Paynesville.
According to Police Spokesman, Sam Collins, during the early morning hours of Monday, the alleged robbers ransacked several homes making away with cash and valuables as the Police arrived on the scene.
“This latest incident resulted into one of the robbers sustaining serious bullet wounds and is currently undergoing treatment at the JFK Hospital in Sinkor under Police protection to avoid his escape from the hospital.”
According to LNP Spokesman, on Monday the LNP was called by residents of the Wood Camp informing them about the presence of armed robbers in their community. He added that immediately a team of ERU officers was dispatched to the scene to bring the situation under control and to rescue the victims from the alleged robbers.
“Upon arriving at the scene, group of men were seen shouting rogue, rogue, in an attempt to ascertain from the group as to the whereabouts of the rogue, a sound of a gun went off toward the officers thereby prompting the ERU to respond resulting to one of the robbers, Prince Musa, sustaining wounds but was able to escape from the scene”, said Collins.
He added: “The Police recovered nine pieces of cell phones, one single barrel gun and one round of ammunition. A handheld radio belonging to LEC has also been recovered by the Police.”
The spokesman also noted that suspect Prince Musa was later arrested in the late afternoon hours of Monday in the Freeport community along with five others; namely: ”Sunnyboy Doe, Robert Zeon, Musa Kamara, Ibrahim Glaywea and Junior Kollie.
More ammunitions recovered
In the crackdown on armed robbery and other crimes, the LNP said they remain vigilant until the city is cleared of armed robbers. The Police Spokesman called on the public to provide information that would lead to the arrest of anyone involved in criminal activities in the country.
“Officers of the Liberia National Police assigned in Bomi County have uncovered a huge quantity of both AK and M-4 ammunitions in an abandoned well and the total round discovered by the LNP amount to 661 rounds in Tubmanburg. The ammunitions are currently in the custody of the Police and further investigation is ongoing,” Collins said.
Meanwhile, the Catholic Justice and Peace commission, after a thorough engagement with the court system in the country, was able to release 21 suspected armed robbers that were behind bars at the Monrovia Central Prison.
He added that the 21 individuals were freed because they passed the two terms of court benchmark without facing trial.
He called on the 21 persons to turn themselves in because, according to him, they are greatly involved in the rising wave of robberies currently spreading across the country.
“We have the pictures of these guys and they are roaming from place to place.”
