Liberia: Young Women Group Mentor Girls on Menstrual Hygiene and Leadership

Monrovia – One hundred and fifty students of seven schools in two counties have completed a mentorship program aimed at educating them on sexual reproductive health and rights and leadership.

The program was organized by Paramount Young Women Initiative (PAYOWI), established March 5, 2005.

Facia Harris, Executive Director of PAYOWI, said the project academic pro gear toward informing women to understand their rights and how to maneuver in a male environment.

The 2019 “Heart to Heart Mentoring program was held under the theme “Empowered to Lead”.

“This mentorship program is to help women build their leadership skill and how they can be mentors in years to come,” Harris said.

The mentoring closing program is the second series. Most of the current mentors were mentees of the previous program.

During the last academic year, seven schools in Montserrado County participated.

According to Ms. Harris, parents have acknowledged their kids’ perception of critical issues.

She said to extend the programs it would require funding, which has been a major challenge for the organization.

She hopes that more counties are added for the next series to build the capacity of young females.

Ms. Harris thanked the volunteers, parents, and schools for accepting the program without financial request.

She disclosed that the organization will begin its vacation school, adding that tie-and-dye, pastry, soap-making will be added to its activities.

Gertrude Davis, an instructor of Duazon Public school, appreciated PAYOWI for the program. She said the mentorship program will prepare the students for incoming opportunities.

Ms. Davis promised to establish Health club in her school to enhance students’ understanding of sexual abuse and hygiene.

Ms. Ulla Weyatta Metzger, Guest speaker urged the students to engage in programs that will improve their lives.
