Liberia: Women Situation Room Condemns Opposition Unity Party for Declaring Themselves Winner of the Oct. 10 Presidential Elections

Monrovia  – The Women’s Situation Room (WSR) has raised concerns over statements made by the Unity Party (UP) during a press conference held at their campaign headquarters in Gbangay Town, Airfield, Monrovia, on Thursday. During the conference, UP officials declared a one-round victory based on their internal tally sheets, instructing their partisans to celebrate.

The WSR is deeply troubled by these premature celebrations, as the National Elections Commission (NEC) has announced results from just  6.66% of the total polling places (392 out of 5,890). These limited results , according to the WSR, cannot conclusively determine the winner of the Presidential and Legislative Elections. The WSR emphasized that this hasty celebration is inconsistent with the Farmington Declaration and has the potential to provoke other political parties in contention, potentially leading to street disturbances and violence.

The Women’s Situation Room firmly opposed any form of violence and urged all political parties, including the enthusiastic Unity Party, to immediately cease and desist from public celebrations and await the final results announcement from the NEC. This restraint is essential to maintain peace and order during this critical time.

Simultaneously, the WSR called upon the NEC to expedite the process of gathering and announcing the election results, ensuring transparency and accuracy in this pivotal democratic exercise.

The Women’s Situation Room reiterated its unwavering commitment to fostering an environment of peace and order, both in the immediate aftermath of this election and in the future. The organization encourages all citizens, political parties, and stakeholders to play their part in maintaining a calm and harmonious atmosphere as Liberia eagerly awaits the final count and the official declaration of the election results.
