Liberia: Weah Wants Opposition Candidates Back Off By-Election

MONROVIA – President George Weah says members of the opposition wanting a place in the Legislature spent 12 years without being able to make any positive impact, and should, therefore, back off the July 2 Montserrado County by-elections.

“For 12 years, we gave our friends the chance to work smoothly because we wanted you to know that they were not the one to create a positive change in this country,” he said.

He added that 12 years of the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s regime should not be compared to his year and half in office. He boasted that he has done so much in a short time compared to the previous regime.

President Weah cautioned partisans of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) not to allow efforts of the fallen lawmakers, who also were CDCians, to go in vain.

President Weah spoke at the headquarters of the CDC when the primaries committee presented to the party’s two candidates, Mr. Abu Kamara, candidate for Montserrado District #15 by-election and Paulita Wie candidate for the senate in the pending by-election.

He described the two candidates as people with a heart of gold.

“If I was campaigning today, I would say to you today that history will repeat itself. If I was campaigning today, I would say to people running around, like I advised them before; my friends on the other side please don’t put foot,” he said.

President Weah boasted about Montserrado being the birth right of CDC and will not allow any other party seize that right. 

“If you can hear me across the globe start coming, return to Montserrdo, if you are a citizen of Montserrado. We have to show to the world that Montserrado is where we were born, this county is ours and we must not allow anyone, besides our candidates of the CDC. We have the right to claim our property. I want all CDCians to ensure that the work of our two fallen lawmakers are not left by the wayside.”
