MONROVIA – Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Head of the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas arrived in Liberia Friday for discussions ahead of the planned June 7 protest in the country.

He held closed door meeting with President George Manneh Weah and later the organizers of the protest.

According to a dispatch from the Executive Mansion, President Weah reiterated his commitment to the protection of Liberia’s peace and security and for all citizens, irrespective of their ethnicity, political and social backgrounds.

President Weah said it is his constitutional and moral obligation to ensure that all Liberians are treated equally in an enabling and peaceful environment.

This, he said, entails remaining engaged with every stakeholder who has an idea for the development, peace and harmony of Liberia.

According to the dispatch, Dr. Chambas commended Pres. Weah for his leadership and urged him to continue to pursue dialogue for the good of the country.

He promised to work with President Weah in the achievement of peace and development of Liberia.

The UN Envoy later met with the organizers of the planned mass demonstration who said they are not backing down on the protest but assured him that it would be peaceful and civil.
