Liberia: U.S Based Liberian Human Rights Advocate Jackson Welcomes Supreme Court’s Ruling Against Prophet Key

MONRVIA – United States based Liberian Human rights advocate, Cllr Lawrence Wah Jackson,  has welcomed the  ruling of the Supreme Court of Liberia sentencing Prophet Key to six months’ imprisonment along with an order for a public apology, describing the decision as a positive step toward restoring respect, accountability, and moral responsibility within Liberia.

In an official statement issued today, Cllr. Jackson noted that the Court’s decision reinforces public confidence in the judicial system and safeguards the dignity of Liberians, particularly women who are often targets of public ridicule and harmful speech.

He praised the Supreme Court for ensuring that the accused was accorded full due process throughout the legal proceedings.

Quoting the Constitution, Cllr. Jackson emphasized: Article 20(a) of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia states: “No person shall be deprived of life, liberty, security of the person, property, privilege or any other right except as the outcome of a hearing judgment consistent with the provisions laid down in this Constitution and in accordance with due process of law.”

He stressed that the Court respected this provision by allowing lawful proceedings before judgment was delivered.

Addressing concerns about freedom of speech, Cllr. Jackson further cited constitutional guidance:

Article 15 of the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression but also provides that:

“This right may be limited by law in order to protect public order, morality, and the rights, reputation, or safety of others.”

According to him, the ruling demonstrates that while free speech is protected, it must not be used to degrade individuals or undermine public decency.

Cllr. Jackson therefore urged citizens to respect judicial authority and promote responsible public discourse that strengthens national unity and social respect.
