Brewerville Township, Montserrado County – Descendants of the Dey tribe living in Montserrado County and parts adjacent are to meet within two weeks in Brewerville Township to choose a new governor.
The decision comes amid a petition signed and filed by hundreds of supporters of Joseph Brown to the Ministry to have him served as their next governor but the petition was objected by other citizens on grounds that the decision was not theirs.
Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs for Administration, Varney Sirleaf, responding to the petition on Tuesday at a town hall meeting in Brewerville said the Ministry cannot endorse the petition until it meets the consensus of the citizens.
“I came here with an open mind, the people have to go and meet to tell us who they want but we cannot make any decision now,” said Deputy Minister Sirleaf.
He called on the Dey citizens to exercise patience in this direction, urging that they cannot go to election divided as it sends a bad signal.
He said the ministry is not interested in any individual occupying the job but is rather interested in fostering unity among the citizens. He called on those at the meeting to put go home and put aside divisiveness and meet together as one people working towards one goal.
According to the Deputy Minister, under his watch the ministry was very successful to have settle dispute of similar nature in WestPoint and New Kru Town, furthering that the people are now living in unity after the settlement.
“My message here today is that the people work in unity in Montserrado, Bomi and the 15 counties of Liberia,” said Deputy Minister Sirleaf.
However, the Deputy Internal Affairs Minister went on to constitute a five-member committee among the Dey citizens who will be tasked with the responsibility to ensure the selection of a new governor and report back to the ministry on the first Sunday of May 2016.
Joseph Brown, a contestant for governor called on his supporters to exercise calm and cooperate with the decision of the Ministry.
“I want to call on you fellow citizens to exercise patience and work with the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the next two weeks for us to get the next governor,” he said.
