GREENVILLE, Sinoe County — The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has called on journalists and media practitioners across the country to prioritize capacity building in specialized areas of reporting to enhance the quality and depth of journalism in Liberia.
By Victoria Wesseh
Speaking at the opening of a five-day training workshop for local journalists in Sinoe County, PUL President Julius Kanubah stressed the need for media professionals to focus on public interest journalism, especially in critical areas such as sustainable natural resource management.
Kanubah noted that many important issues remain underreported due to the media’s concentration on politics and personalities rather than substantive development and governance matters.
The training, organized by the CERATH Development Organization (CDO) in partnership with the PUL, forms part of the Liberia Fisheries Governance Project (LFGP), funded by the European Union.
Mr. Derek Adabie, Project Manager of CDO, said the training aims to strengthen the capacity of journalists and media institutions in Sinoe County to produce ethical, timely, and accurate reports on fisheries governance, as well as the rights and livelihoods of fisherfolk.
He added that the initiative also seeks to boost journalists’ advocacy skills and promote inclusive participation in fisheries governance and decision-making processes, with a particular focus on women, youth, and marginalized groups.
About 11 journalists from local media outlets — including Voice of Sinoe, Liberty Broadcasting Service (LBS), and Radio Butaw — are participating in the training.
Sinoe County, known for its extensive coastline, hosts about 24 fishing communities, making accurate and informed reporting on fisheries issues crucial for local development and sustainability.
The initiative reflects the PUL’s ongoing commitment to fostering a vibrant, informed, and development-driven media landscape that effectively addresses Liberia’s pressing national and community-level issues.
