Monrovia, Liberia — Plan International Liberia has earned national recognition for its exceptional role in implementing the She Leads Liberia Project, a five-year initiative that has reshaped opportunities for girls and young women to participate meaningfully in leadership and governance across Liberia.
The honour was presented during a project close-out and recognition ceremony, where the organisation received a trophy and certificate of appreciation in acknowledgment of its strategic leadership, effective partnership coordination, and sustainable results delivered at community level.
On Thursday, the She Leads project team, joined by members of Plan International Liberia’s senior management, formally presented the award to Country Director Ms. Mirriam Murray, commending her leadership and the collective efforts of the team.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Murray praised the dedication and accountability demonstrated throughout the project’s lifespan.
“The success of the She Leads Liberia Project reflects years of disciplined effort, professionalism, and commitment to our mission,” she said. “This recognition affirms the integrity of our work and gives us confidence that Plan International Liberia will continue to attract opportunities that amplify impact for girls and young women.”
The She Leads Liberia Project was implemented through a strong consortium involving Defense for Children International (DCI), Community Health Initiatives (CHI), and Plan International Liberia, working closely with local partners UFDUM, CSI, and KEEP.
Designed to address entrenched gender inequalities, the project tackled barriers such as limited access to resources, harmful social norms, and exclusion from decision-making spaces. Although initially planned to reach 10,000 girls and young women, the project exceeded its goal, empowering 11,433 girls and young women, while also engaging boys and young men, parents, caregivers, traditional and religious leaders, and local authorities.
Spanning 20 communities, the initiative strengthened child and youth protection systems, promoted inclusive leadership, and encouraged proactive risk prevention, laying the groundwork for long-term social transformation.
The recognition highlights the powerful outcomes achieved when girls and young women are supported to lead and influence change within their communities. This milestone further underscores Plan International Liberia’s continued commitment to gender equality and to building a future where the voices and leadership of girls and young women are fully recognised and valued.
