Liberia: New Textbook Targets Drug Abuse, Hygiene, and Safety for 5th & 6th Graders

It outlines the dangers of widely abused substances such as kush, crack, heroin, and tramadol, equipping students with practical knowledge to avoid harmful drug use.

Monrovia – Liberian Health Promotion and Education Expert Forkpah Pewee has authored a new Health Science textbook that promises to transform health education for young learners across Liberia.

By Willie N. Tokpah

Recently approved by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and integrated into the national curriculum, the book is tailored for 5th and 6th-grade students, addressing some of the nation’s most pressing public health challenges.

Tackling Drug Abuse Head-On

With drug abuse emerging as a public health crisis among young Liberians, Pewee’s textbook takes a direct approach. It outlines the dangers of widely abused substances such as kush, crack, heroin, and tramadol, equipping students with practical knowledge to avoid harmful drug use.

“This book doesn’t sugarcoat the reality. Children need real information, not vague warnings,” Pewee said at the launch in Monrovia. “Our goal is to give students the power to make informed, healthy decisions early in life.”

Affordable and Accessible

Priced at just L$600, the book is designed to be affordable for families in both urban and rural communities. Parents and educators have praised the low cost as a step toward ensuring equitable access to quality health education.

“The low cost ensures no child is left behind in gaining vital health knowledge,” a teacher in Gbarnga, Bong County remarked.

Hands-On, Practical Learning

Unlike traditional textbooks, Pewee’s publication emphasizes experiential learning. Alongside theory, students are encouraged to plant trees, organize clean-up days, and conduct hygiene inspections—activities that connect classroom lessons with real-life applications.

Promoting Hygiene and Environmental Care

The textbook also reinforces personal hygiene and sanitation practices critical in the fight against preventable diseases. It teaches proper handwashing, household cleanliness, and community hygiene promotion.

Environmental responsibility is another key theme, with activities like tree planting designed to instill sustainability values and nurture environmentally conscious future leaders.

Safety at the Core

Recognizing that many children travel long distances to school, the book dedicates a section to safety, offering age-appropriate guidance on staying safe at home, in school, and on the road.

Written by a Trusted Expert

Forkpah Pewee, who has authored five books and published five scientific articles, is respected nationally and internationally for his work in health promotion. His textbook reflects both local realities and global best practices, making it culturally relevant and educationally sound.

“This is more than just a book; it’s a tool for national development,” said educator Michael Sonkalay. “Pewee has created something that speaks directly to the challenges our children face and provides them with real solutions.”

A Milestone for Education and Health

The rollout of this Health Science textbook marks a significant advancement in Liberia’s education and health sectors. With the MOE’s backing, schools are expected to incorporate it into lessons this academic year.

Educators and parents are optimistic about its long-term impact, describing it as a critical resource to help shape healthier, safer, and more responsible future generations.
