Liberia: LINSU, SPAL Seal Landmark Partnership to Boost Student Media and Press Training

MONROVIA – The Liberia National Students’ Union (LINSU) in collaboration with the Students Press Association of Liberia (SPAL), has formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), establishing a collaboration aimed at significantly enhancing the welfare of the student community and strengthening the nation’s education system.

The partnership, signed at LINSU’s office in Oldest Congo Town, Montserrado County on Thursday, November 13, 2025, commits both institutions to tirelessly address issues affecting students across Liberia.

The President of the Liberia National Students Union James Gbelee Washington, speaking during the MOU, pledged its support to SPAL in six key areas designed to empower student journalists and expand media opportunities for Liberian students.

According to him, the MOU covers the Six-Point Action Plan for an intensive press training program, media empowerment, yearly student press summit, opportunity for press students, and expansion of SPAL outside of Montserrado County.

He further said the MOU is a strong commitment to professionalism and ethical standards.

According to him, both SPAL and LINSU have agreed to display “moral discipline, transparency, reliability, accountability, and effective communication” in all their dealings.

“The agreement lays out clear rules for engagement and conflict resolution with no interference neither SPAL nor LINSU shall be entitled to speak for or intrude into the internal affairs of the other party.’’

“The leadership of both organizations has committed to adhering wholeheartedly to the principles of the MOU, promising to achieve the key areas of partnership and ensure a safe, inclusive, productive, and purpose-driven environment for all members of SPAL across Liberia,” he added.

Also speaking during the signing ceremony, SPAL Executive Director Sacatirus B. Kangar, said that both institutions are expected to demonstrate moral discipline, transparency, reliability, accountability, and a strong commitment to excellent service in the implementation of the agreement.

He further clarified that under the terms of the MoU, neither SPAL nor LINSU is authorized to speak on behalf of the other or interfere in each other’s internal affairs, stressing the importance of mutual respect and independence within the partnership.

“The partnership is effective immediately upon approval by the authorities of both SPAL and LINSU and remains binding on both parties,” SPAL Executive Director added.
