PLEEBO, Maryland — The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) Maryland County Detachment, in collaboration with members of the Joint Security and the Pleebo City Corporation, on Wednesday launched a cleanup campaign across the streets of Pleebo City as part of activities marking this year’s World Drug Day Observance.

The exercise, held on June 24, brought together more than 20 officers from the LDEA, the Liberia National Police (LNP) and the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), who worked collectively to clean various streets within the city.
Speaking at a brief closing ceremony held at Pleebo City Hall, Pleebo City Mayor Larry Geekor commended the LDEA and the Joint Security for their continued efforts in promoting a safer and healthier community.
Mayor Geekor pledged the city’s support to the anti-drug campaign and assured organizers of his participation in the official World Drug Day program.
“I will be on the official World Drug Day celebration. I’m happy that we continue to work together. Thank you for this work today. The City Corporation will always open its doors to you,” Mayor Geekor stated.
Also speaking, Special Agent John Williams McGee, Chief of Operations of the LDEA Maryland County Detachment, said the cleanup campaign serves as the opening activity for a series of events leading to the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
According to Mr. McGee, the activities will continue on Thursday with a friendly football match between the LDEA team and the Old Timers, while the official celebration will take place on Friday, June 26.
“Today is cleanup day, Thursday is sports day where we will be playing the Old Timers, and Friday, June 26, is the official day. We will be burning all drugs seized over the past year,” Mr. McGee disclosed.
He explained that the drugs scheduled for destruction are substances seized by the LDEA Maryland County Detachment between June 2025 and June 2026.
The destruction exercise is expected to take place in Philadelphia Community, Harper City, where similar exercises have traditionally been conducted.
Meanwhile, Superintendent J. Max Roberts, Chief of Operations of the Liberia National Police in Region Five, reaffirmed the police’s commitment to supporting the fight against illicit drugs in Maryland County.
“We will always buttress the efforts of the LDEA to ensure that our county remains drug-free,” Supt. Roberts said.
World Drug Day, officially known as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, is observed annually on June 26 to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and to strengthen action against the illicit drug trade worldwide.
