Monrovia— The Liberia Kickball Federation (LKF) through its president, Emmanuel Surprise Whea, has vowed to reject the government’s 2024 budgetary support to the sport.
In July of this year, the government of Liberia allotted US$7 million in its 2024 national budget for the Ministry of Youth and Sports, with the kickball budget being slashed from USD$1050 to USD$750.
Speaking during the official closing ceremony of the LKF league for 2024 on Sunday, September 22, the federation president disclosed that they will reject the budget due to its decrease.
He accused the government of not supporting the female sport, something he feels is unfair to the country’s own grown sport.
“The decision to place such an amount in the budget is a mockery to kickball development across the country” he narrated.
Whea alleged that due to lack of support from government, many females are turning their eyes away from kickball to other sports.
“Some of our prayers are now going away to other sports due to poor support and the government should see reason to improve our budget” he explained.
Speaking further, the Liberia Kickball Federation President called on the government to construct more sports sites to help promote athletics.
“The absence of the facility is leading to the decline of enthusiasm and the production of athletes in Monrovia and the only solution is for the government to begin building more facilities to help unearth more athletes.”
He said the decline of athletics across the country could be attributed to the low attention given to sports by those in the country’s leadership.
