GANTA, Nimba County – A joint security officers comprising the Liberia National Police (LNP), Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) and Customs at the Ganta-Guinea Border Crossing arrested a Guinean national on Saturday, March 14 with illegal drugs and ammunition.
The swift operation uncovered a hidden cache of illegal drugs and ammunition in his vehicle, highlighting the porous frontier’s vulnerability to smuggling.
The bust unfolded around 2:15 p.m. during a routine checkpoint inspection under the scorching afternoon sun.
A battered Toyota pickup truck, its faded green paint chipped from rough border roads and bearing Guinean license plate AV 1189, rumbled to a stop at the metal barrier.
The air hummed with the chatter of motorbike taxis weaving through crowds of weary cross-border travelers, their faces slick with sweat, while vendors shouted prices for cold sodas and fried plantains.
Officers from the LNP, LIS and Customs stationed at this bustling gateway linking Liberia and Guinea waved the driver over for a standard search.
What started as routine quickly turned tense. Peering into concealed compartments behind the dashboard and under frayed floor mats stained with red laterite dirt, they discovered 259 packs of Tramadol, the potent opioid painkiller rife for abuse in West African street markets.
Tucked alongside were 29 packs of single-barrel shotgun rounds, each brass shell glinting ominously in the sunlight—a grim testament to the border’s dual threats of narcotics trafficking and arms proliferation.
Nimba County Commander of the Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA), Special Agent Buster Jolon, briefed reporters at the scene.
The suspect, 47- year-old Mohammed Sheriff from Guinea, offered no resistance during the arrest.
His face etched with apprehension, hands steady but eyes darting, he was swiftly handcuffed and transported to Ganta Police Station, where he remains in custody undergoing investigation.
The contraband sealed in evidence bags amid the checkpoint’s haze of diesel fumes has been handed over to the LDEA and National Security Agency for forensic analysis.
Investigators suspect deeper links to cross-border trafficking networks, fueled by Guinea’s role as a known transit hub for drugs heading south into Liberia and beyond.
This incident spotlights Liberia’s intensified border security push amid rising regional alarms over drug flows and small arms smuggling.
Ganta, a vital trade artery, has seen similar busts in recent months, including marijuana hauls and counterfeit goods.
Local residents, gathered in knots near the checkpoint, praised the joint operation as a vital win for community safety.
“These borders are our front door finally, someone’s watching it,” said trader Esther Kollie, wiping dust from her brow.
Security experts, however, urge more: enhanced patrols with sniffer dogs, surveillance drones, and intelligence-sharing with Guinean counterparts.
As dusk fell Saturday, casting long shadows over the barrier, officers resumed checks, determined to plug the gaps in this restless frontier.
