MONROVIA – The 2025/2026 National County Sports Meet has reached the semifinal stage, but the nationwide anticipation is being clouded by a wave of controversy following a quarterfinal round that many fans and administrators have labeled a “disgrace” to the integrity of the game.

The final day of the quarterfinals was marred by a goalless draw between Margibi and Grand Kru counties a result widely criticized for an apparent lack of competitive intent.
Spectators at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex (SKD) noted a match devoid of shots on goal, fouls, or urgency, leading to allegations that both teams played for a “convenient draw” to ensure mutual advancement.
“This was not the kind of football the County Meet is known for,” said James Kollie, a disappointed fan. “People expected passion, but what we saw was a betrayal of the spirit of the competition.”
Despite the backlash and calls for the Ministry of Youth and Sports to investigate the fixture, the tournament proceeds to Wednesday’s semifinals.
The “Final Before the Final”
The opening football semifinal features a heavyweight clash between Nimba County and Margibi County. Having both progressed from the same preliminary group, Nimba enters as the group winner, while Margibi looks to redeem its reputation following the quarterfinal outcry.
Isaac Dolo, described the encounter as a “litmus test for character.”
“These are two powerhouse teams. This match will separate those who are truly ready for the trophy from those who are just lucky to be here,” the he told FrontPage Africa.
The Tactical Battle: Cape Mount vs. Grand Kru
The second semifinal pits Grand Cape Mount County against Grand Kru County.
The fixture highlights a tactical showdown between Cape Mount’s highly-rated head coach, Samir Kamara, and a resilient Grand Kru side.
Coach Kamara expressed confidence ahead of the match but remained wary of the “surprise package” nature of his opponents.
“We respect Grand Kru. They are organized and difficult to break down, but my players are focused on the final,” Kamara said.
On the opposite bench, Grand Kru head coach Emmanuel Kehkeh remained defiant against the criticism regarding their qualification.
“People can say what they want. What matters is what happens on the pitch,” Kehkeh told reporters. “We are coming into the semifinal with one goal to win and silence the doubters.”
Players to Watch
In the Cape Mount and Grand Kru clash, the spotlight shines on Cape Mount’s winger Ralph Weah, whose pace has terrorized defenses throughout the tournament. He will be supported by playmaker Jenkins Sie in the midfield.
Grand Kru will look to striker Varney B. Varney to provide the clinical finish needed to upset the Westerners.
For Nimba, former tournament MVP James Tarpeh remains the talisman. Margibi will counter with the trio of Frederick Dennis, John Momo, and Momo Blamo, as the “Gibibi” boys seek to break their “semifinal curse” after two consecutive exits at this stage.
Kickball and Final Countdown
Parallel to the football action, the kickball semifinals will see Margibi face Grand Kru, while Nimba takes on Grand Cape Mount. Unlike the football category, the kickball competition has been praised for its discipline and high level of competition.
The National County Sports Meet is scheduled to reach its climax on January 18, with the finals for football, kickball, and basketball. While the cloud of the Margibi-Grand Kru draw lingers, fans are hopeful that the semifinals will restore the prestige of Liberia’s biggest sporting event.
