Traditional powerhouse Nimba County is set to clash with Grand Kru County in a highly anticipated football grand final a high-stakes rematch of their controversial 2018 encounter.

The showdown has reignited one of the most compelling rivalries in County Meet history, blending themes of revenge, regional pride, and championship legacy into what is widely expected to be a tense and electrifying finale.

Road to the Final

Both counties secured their places in the final in commanding fashion during the semifinal rounds.

Nimba County delivered a masterclass performance, hammering long-time rivals Margibi County 5–1. The one-sided encounter highlighted Nimba’s attacking depth and big-match experience, sending a clear message to their upcoming opponents.

Grand Kru, representing Liberia’s southeastern belt, was equally impressive. The “Kru Boys” brushed aside Grand Cape Mount County 3–0 in a performance defined by tactical discipline and clinical finishing.

Their emphatic victories have set the stage for what many analysts describe as the most emotionally charged fixture of the 2026 competition.

A Rivalry Rooted in Controversy

Sunday’s clash inevitably revives memories of the 2018 County Meet final, a match that remains etched in the annals of Liberian sports for all the wrong reasons.

During that encounter, Grand Kru was declared the winner after Nimba County staged a dramatic walkout before the end of regulation time. The protest, led by then-head coach Mouctarr Fofana over officiating decisions, left a bitter taste for the “Mountaineers.”

Eight years later, Nimba views this rematch as a long-awaited opportunity for redemption.

Conversely, Grand Kru enters the pitch determined to prove that their previous triumph was earned on merit and to reaffirm their dominance over the six-time champions.

Championship Legacy at Stake

Beyond the narrative of revenge, the final carries significant historical weight.

Nimba County currently stands as the most successful team in the tournament’s football category, boasting six titles. A victory on Sunday would extend their record haul to seven championships, further cementing their status as the “Goliaths” of the competition.

Grand Kru County follows closely with five titles. A win on Sunday would see them draw level with Nimba, reshaping the balance of power in Liberian county football and elevating the southeastern side to the top of the all-time leaderboard.

A Festival Beyond Football

Jointly organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National County Sports Meet remains Liberia’s most potent tool for national unification.

Featuring all 15 political subdivisions, the tournament is designed to promote national cohesion, youth development, and talent discovery.

Kickball Drama

The excitement is not limited to the pitch. In the kickball category, Margibi County edged Grand Kru 1–0 to secure a spot in the grand final.

They will face Grand Cape Mount County, whose girls produced one of the tournament’s most thrilling comebacks. Cape Mount overturned a two-home-run deficit to defeat Nimba County 5–3 in a dramatic semifinal, setting the stage for a tense battle for the kickball trophy.

Anticipation at the SKD

With tens of thousands of supporters expected to descend upon the SKD Sports Complex on Sunday, the atmosphere in Monrovia is reaching a fever pitch.

Whether the day ends in Nimba’s redemption or Grand Kru’s historic equalizer, the 2026 National County Sports Meet final is poised to be a defining moment in Liberia’s sporting history where supremacy and prestige are the ultimate prizes.
