Liberia: Bettomax Championship Cup Heats Up as Watanga, Bea Mountain Play to Goalless Draw, LISCR Meets Defending Champion Heaven Eleven Today

MONROVIA — The second edition of the Bettomax Championship Cup intensified on Wednesday, August 19, as Watanga FC and Bea Mountain FC battled to a goalless draw at Tusa Field, leaving both sides with everything to play for as the group stage reaches its decisive phase.

The encounter was highly competitive, with both teams creating scoring opportunities but failing to find the finishing touch.

Watanga squandered clear chances that could have changed the outcome, while Bea Mountain applied sustained pressure at different intervals.

Watanga Head Coach Theophilus Geekor described the result as a positive step against what he termed one of the strongest squads in the country.

Geekor noted that Bea Mountain’s financial backing has enabled the club to assemble some of Liberia’s top talent, making Wednesday’s match a stern test.

“It was a massive game for us against a big team,” Geekor said, praising the Opposition’s ability to attract quality players.

He also acknowledged the threat posed by former Watanga players now featuring for the “Gold Boys.”

“They had three generals in the team coming from Watanga Darius Garmondeh, Nuch Zohn, and Leo Zinnah. With all the experience they possess and knowing Watanga inside out, we thought today was going to be a very bad day for us. But we stood strong, fought hard, and I am happy we secured a point,” Geekor added.

Watanga have now recorded two draws in the competition, having opened their campaign with a 2-2 result against Paynesville FC.

Bea Mountain Maintain Group Lead

Despite failing to break down Watanga’s defense, Bea Mountain remain atop the group with four points from two matches, following their opening 4-1 victory over Discoveries SA.

The Gold Boys need just one point from their final group fixture to guarantee a spot in the knockout stage.

Bea Mountain’s head coach was unavailable for post-match comments.

Discoveries, Paynesville Share Points in Stalemate

In the late kickoff at Tusa Field, Discoveries SA and Paynesville FC also settled for a 0-0 draw.

Discoveries SA Head Coach Reo Nyanti noted that the preseason tournament remains vital for assessing his squad.

“The players are trying to adapt to each other and my style of play. I saw positive signs today,” Nyanti said, adding that the team is still building the peak fitness required for his possession-based system.

Meanwhile, Paynesville FC Head Coach Sunday Seah expressed confidence despite his side remaining winless.

“We brought in a lot of new players and are blending them gradually. It is not impossible for us to win our final match against Bea Mountain,” Seah insisted.

Thursday Fixtures

Action continues Thursday, August 20, at Tusa Field as LISCR FC face Heaven Eleven in the early kickoff, followed by LPRC Oilers taking on Wologizi FC. Both LISCR and LPRC Oilers enter their fixtures seeking back-to-back victories to cement their spots in the next round.
