Monrovia – ArcelorMittal Liberia’s continued investment in training Liberians demonstrates a clear commitment to building a skilled national workforce capable of driving the country’s industrial and economic future.
Through its structured training programs, the company is equipping young Liberians with modern technical competencies in mining, engineering, locomotive operations, mechanical maintenance, health and safety, and other specialized fields that are essential to the extractive sector.
These opportunities provide participants with hands-on experience, internationally aligned standards, and the practical knowledge required to excel in a competitive global industry.
Recently, ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) received high commendation from AFCONS Infrastructure Limited for its strong commitment to workforce compliance and skills development, following the successful training and certification of 42 Liberian workers under a 2024 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
The recognition was extended to AML’s Contractor Compliance and Management Unit, which has played a key role in resolving 16 workforce-related issues and ensuring smooth coordination between the companies during ongoing project activities.
The 42 trainees completed an intensive 90-day hands-on technical program facilitated by AFCONS, gaining practical expertise in conveyor installation, piping, equipment maintenance, warehouse and store management, pipe-fusion techniques, crane positioning, and foundation layout, among other industrial skills.
Rather than pursuing punitive measures for compliance gaps, AML opted for an empowerment-driven approach, using training as a tool to strengthen local capacity and build a more technically prepared Liberian workforce for the mining and infrastructure sectors.
AFCONS officials praised AML’s proactive leadership and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to promoting local content, workforce development, and long-term capacity building in Liberia.
The joint initiative is being hailed as a model partnership demonstrating how industry collaboration can create opportunities, enhance productivity, and support national development.
Beyond developing individual skills, ArcelorMittal’s training initiatives serve as a catalyst for broader national capacity building. By preparing Liberians to occupy roles traditionally filled by expatriates, the company is helping reduce dependency on foreign labor while promoting long-term workforce localization.
This shift not only empowers local communities but also ensures that the benefits of major concession operations are more directly connected to Liberian professionals who understand the country’s context and aspirations.
The impact of these programs extends far beyond the mining sites. As trained Liberians graduate into the workforce, they become ambassadors of excellence, innovation, and professionalism across multiple sectors of the economy. Their enhanced skills contribute to safer operations, improved productivity, and stronger institutional performance within both the private and public sectors.
ArcelorMittal Liberia’s investment in human capital is therefore not just a corporate initiative—it is a strategic national asset that strengthens Liberia’s development trajectory and prepares the next generation of leaders for opportunities at home and abroad.
