Liberia: 23-Year-Old Father Commits Suicide In Ganta as Police Launch Probe Into Incident

 Ganta, Nimba County – Police in Ganta City, Nimba County  have launched an investigation into the tragic suicide of a 23-year-old man in the Gbalagbain Community,  Ganta City, Nimba County, marking the second of such incident in the area within less than two years.

Alphanso Suah, a 23-year-old resident of Gboryee Community and father of two young children, left his home under unclear circumstances on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.

He traveled a short distance to his grandmother’s modest home in the bustling yet tight-knit Gbalagbain neighborhood, a riverside area known for its mix of zinc-roofed houses, small farms, and daily market chatter.

There, inside the dimly lit bathroom, Suah carried out the fatal act by hanging himself with a rope he had purchased himself.

Neighbors discovered his body early Wednesday morning, hanging motionless from a beam, sending shockwaves through the community.

“We heard cries and rushed over its  heartbreaking, especially with his little kids,” said one local resident who wished to remain anon  ymous. No suicide note was found and family members expressed bewilderment, stating there were no apparent signs of distress or known reasons leading to his decision.’’

Suah, described by acquaintances as a hardworking young man who occasionally did odd jobs in Ganta’s vibrant motorbike taxi scene, leaves behind a grieving wife and two toddlers. This incident echoes a strikingly similar tragedy less than two years ago when a 24-year-old motorcyclist from the same Gbalagbain Community took his own life using a rope he had bought himself.

That case  too  remains shrouded in mystery with no motive identified, despite initial police inquiries.

Both deaths have raised alarms in the community, where dusty roads wind past wooden stalls selling smoked fish and plantains  and where economic pressures from Liberia’s rural economy often weigh heavily on young families.

Meanwhile, investigation is ongoing into the cause of the incident with officers canvassing witnesses, examining the scene for any overlooked clues and exploring potential mental health factors amid rising concerns over suicide in Nimba County.

“We’re treating this seriously and urging anyone with information to come forward,” police authorities in Ganta City said.

The police authorities have reportedly secured the rope and other evidence from the grandmother’s bathroom, now cordoned off as a somber reminder of the loss.

Local leaders and residents are calling for increased mental health awareness and support services in the area, where access to counseling remains limited.
