MONROVIA – The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equality and expanding opportunities for women and girls in sports as it joined the global community to celebrate International Women’s Day at the Blue Field in Monrovia.

Delivering the keynote address on Thursday , March 5, 2026, LFA Third Vice President and Chairperson of Women’s Football, Jodie Reid-Seton, described the occasion as a moment to honor the achievements of women while renewing the call for equal opportunities in both sports and society.
“International Women’s Day reminds us that women have long contributed to the growth and development of communities, nations, and industries,” Reid-Seton said. “While progress has been made, we must continue to break down barriers and create spaces where women and girls can thrive.”
Football as a Tool for Social Change
Madam Reid-Seton highlighted the growing impact of women’s football globally, noting that major competitions like the FIFA Women’s World Cup have showcased the talent and determination of female athletes, inspiring millions of young girls.
She emphasized that women’s football is more than just a sport; it is a powerful vehicle for social change.
According to the VP, the game helps young girls develop discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills that extend far beyond the pitch.
Acknowledging Progress and Facing Challenges
Reid-Seton acknowledged the efforts of international bodies, including FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), for their increased investment and development programs across the continent.
However, she was candid about the persistent hurdles facing the local game.
“Despite these advancements, we still face challenges including unequal pay, limited resources, and reduced media visibility. We must urge sustained advocacy and collaboration to ensure fairness for our female athletes,” she noted.
She further stated that investing in women’s sports is an investment in stronger communities, noting that supporting Liberian female footballers will promote healthy lifestyles and create new pathways for professional success.
Stakeholders Gather at Blue Field
The event brought together high-profile stakeholders from the sports and gender sectors, including Madam Yemi Falayajo, Deputy Country Director of UN Women Liberia, Sheba Brown, Vice President for Women’s Affairs, Liberia National Olympic Committee, Roseline Konneh, Member of the FIFA Women’s Football Committee, Atty. Laura Kolakeh, Deputy Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection.
The commemoration concluded with a series of exhibition matches at the Blue Field, showcasing the rising talent in the domestic league.
Through this celebration, the LFA renewed its pledge to work with national and international partners to ensure that women across Liberia have the opportunity to participate, compete, and lead in the “beautiful game.”
