MONROVIA — Grand Bassa County Senator Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence has been elected as the new Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate.
She was nominated for the post by Senator Prince Moye of Bong County.
Senator Gbenzongar Findley of Grand Bassa declined to contest shortly after he was nominated for the post by Senator Nathaniel McGill of Margibi County.
He attributed his decision to quit to normal traditional practice and consultations held with others.
Grand Kru County Senator and former Pro Tempore Albert Chie who was recently sanctioned by the United States government for alleged acts of corruption cast the white ballot for the election of Senator Lawrence .
Pro Tempore Lawrence hugged and thanked her colleague Findley for his decision taken to quit.
Senator Lawrence, Political Leader of the Liberty Party, was elected at the National legislature in 2013 following the sudden death of former Senator John Whitfield.
In December 2020, she was elected to serve her full term.
She excelled to the Standardbearer position of the LP following the death of the party’s Founder and Political Leader Counsellor Charles Walker Brumskine.
She was hailed and respected for the decision taken to support President-elect Joseph Nyuma Boakai after she was not selected to be his running mate.
Though her rejection caused mixed feelings among executives and partisans of the LP, Senator Lawrence managed to settle internal wrangling and potential withdrawal of support from the Unity Party during the October 2023 General and presidential elections in Liberia.
