Monrovia – Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari has died in London at the age of 82, following a prolonged illness, according to an announcement by the Nigerian presidential spokesperson on X (formerly Twitter).
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985, was overthrown in a coup and subsequently imprisoned for 40 months. After his release, he transitioned into politics and, after three unsuccessful presidential bids, made history in 2015 by becoming the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent president in Nigeria.
He was re-elected in 2019 and served two full terms before being succeeded by current President Bola Tinubu.
In April, Buhari traveled to London for what aides described as a routine medical check-up.
