ALJA Urges Diplomatic Action to Resolve Liberia–Guinea Border Tension in Lofa

Monrovia – The Association of Liberian Journalists in the Americas (ALJA) has expressed concern over growing tensions along the border between Liberia and Guinea, particularly affecting communities in Lofa County.

In a statement issued Wednesday from Monticello, Minnesota, the organization called on the Government of Liberia to urgently engage Guinean authorities through diplomatic channels to ensure a peaceful and lasting resolution to what appears to be an emerging border dispute.

“The safety, security, and livelihoods of civilians living along the border must remain a top priority for both governments,” ALJA said in the release.

The organization noted that reports suggesting uncertainty over territorial boundaries and the presence of security forces in the disputed area are troubling and risk escalating tensions between communities that have historically maintained peaceful cross-border relations.

Call for Calm and Dialogue

ALJA President Joey Kennedy emphasized the importance of calm and constructive engagement between the two neighboring countries.

He noted that Liberia and Guinea share a long history of cooperation and strong cultural ties, particularly among communities living along their shared border.

“We urge the Government of Liberia to work swiftly and diplomatically with Guinean authorities to de-escalate the situation and pursue a permanent and peaceful resolution that protects the rights and safety of citizens on both sides of the border,” Kennedy said.

Regional Bodies Encouraged to Intervene

ALJA also encouraged the Liberian government to work closely with regional organizations, including the Mano River Union and the Economic Community of West African States, to address the issue through dialogue and established diplomatic mechanisms.

According to the organization, respecting international agreements governing the shared border will be critical to preventing further escalation.

Kennedy also called on authorities to keep the public adequately informed about developments while ensuring that journalists covering the situation are able to work freely and safely in the public interest.

ALJA stressed that maintaining the long-standing diplomatic relationship between Liberia and Guinea is essential to preserving peace and stability in the Mano River region.

The organization believes that a swift and constructive response from both governments will help protect communities along the border and reinforce Liberia’s commitment to regional peace and cooperation.
