NEW DELHI, India — Liberia has officially reopened its Embassy in New Delhi after more than 35 years without a resident diplomatic mission in India, marking a major step in efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti is in New Delhi to formally inaugurate the Embassy on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and the Government and people of Liberia.
The Liberian Embassy in India was closed more than three decades ago amid geopolitical and other challenges facing the country. Successive administrations subsequently sought to restore a permanent diplomatic presence in India, recognizing the country’s growing importance as a partner in Asia.
The reopening culminates years of efforts spanning several administrations. The Government said President Boakai’s administration has built on earlier initiatives to complete the process and restore Liberia’s resident diplomatic presence in New Delhi.
Speaking ahead of the inauguration, Minister Nyanti described the reopening as both a diplomatic milestone and an opportunity to deliver practical benefits to Liberians.
“After more than three decades, Liberia once again has a permanent diplomatic home in India,” Nyanti said. “This is a major milestone for our country and a testament to President Boakai’s commitment to strengthening Liberia’s global partnerships and ensuring that our diplomacy delivers tangible results for our people.”
She also acknowledged the efforts of successive administrations that worked toward reestablishing the mission.
The reopening is particularly significant given the growing number of Liberian students pursuing education and professional training in India, as well as Liberians traveling there for medical treatment.
The resident Embassy is expected to strengthen consular services and provide more direct assistance to Liberian citizens while creating opportunities for scholarships, education, healthcare and professional capacity building.
Beyond consular services, the Embassy is expected to serve as Liberia’s principal diplomatic and economic platform in India, with a focus on attracting investment, promoting trade and private-sector partnerships, and expanding cooperation in agriculture, technology, infrastructure and healthcare.
The mission will also support Liberia’s broader economic diplomacy and national development priorities by helping mobilize technical assistance and development partnerships.
India remains an important development and economic partner for Liberia, with bilateral cooperation spanning education, health, agriculture, technology, infrastructure, capacity building, trade and private-sector development.
The Government of Liberia expressed appreciation to India for its cooperation and support in facilitating the reopening of the Embassy and said the development marks a new chapter in Liberia–India relations.
