Monrovia—Liberia has recorded a significant achievement on the continental medical regulatory stage following the election of one of its leading female medical professionals, Dr. Deddeh E. P. Supuwood, to the Management Committee (MANCO) of the Association of Medical Councils of Africa (AMCOA).
Dr. Supuwood, a Statutory Council Member of the Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) and President of the Liberia Medical and Dental Association (LMDA), was elected on Thursday in Accra, Ghana, at the conclusion of AMCOA’s 28th Conference.
The Liberian physician emerged victorious after securing 8 of the 19 votes cast among four candidates representing different African countries. Dr. Supuwood was the only female candidate in the election.
Her election marks an important milestone for Liberia and provides the country with a stronger voice within the continental medical regulatory community.
During her two-year tenure, Dr. Supuwood will have the opportunity to contribute to discussions and advocate for Liberia’s medical regulatory priorities, including challenges, achievements, policy development, professional compliance, and strategies aimed at strengthening healthcare regulation and improving healthcare delivery across the country.
About Dr. Deddeh E. P. Supuwood
Dr. Deddeh E. P. Supuwood is a Liberian Medical Oncologist and healthcare leader with expertise in medical oncology, cancer advocacy, and health systems strengthening.
In addition to serving as President of the LMDA, Dr. Supuwood serves as Acting Head of the Oncology Unit at John F. Kennedy Medical Center, Liberia’s national referral hospital.
She also serves as a board member of the John F. Kennedy Medical Center and the National Pharmacy Board.
Following the completion of her specialist training in Medical Oncology and Malignant Hematology at the National Cancer Institute, Cairo University, Egypt, Dr. Supuwood returned to Liberia and established the country’s first official post-war oncology unit.
Through her leadership in oncology, she has contributed to expanding access to chemotherapy and multidisciplinary cancer care while mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals and helping to advance cancer care in Liberia.
Dr. Supuwood is also the only female member among five executives serving on AMCOA’s Management Committee, further highlighting her achievement and representation of women in medical leadership and regulation across Africa.

Since the establishment of the Association of Medical Councils of Africa (AMCOA), this is the first time a Liberian has been elected through a democratic voting process to serve on the Association’s Management Committee Members from; Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Nigeria, Malawi, Rwanda and she from Liberia.
Her election is expected to further strengthen Liberia’s participation in continental conversations on medical regulation, professional standards, patient safety, healthcare governance, and health systems improvement.
