Monrovia– The European Union (EU) secured narrow victories over the Government of Liberia (GoL) in both kickball and football matches on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, as activities marking this year’s Europe Day celebrations officially got underway.

The friendly encounters, held at the Samuel Kanyon Doe (SKD) Sports Complex in Paynesville, brought together senior officials of the Liberian government and members of the EU delegation in an atmosphere defined by sportsmanship and diplomatic unity.
In the highly anticipated kickball match, the EU clinched a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Liberia in a contest characterized by tactical plays and excitement.
The victory marks a historic turnaround for the EU side, which had suffered defeats in all four previous editions of the fixture.
The Liberian squad was captained by Commerce and Industry Minister Madalene Diagoseh, whose standout performance drew loud cheers from spectators.
Her leadership and skill on the field earned her a standing ovation, underscoring her continued passion for sports even while serving in the public sector.
Speaking to journalists immediately after the match, Minister Diagoseh emphasized the critical role of sports in strengthening bilateral relations and promoting community unity.
“Today was not just about winning or losing; it was about bringing people together,” Minister Diagoseh noted. “Sports has the power to unite us, and I am proud to be part of this initiative that strengthens the bond between Liberia and our international partners.”
In the football category, both sides played to an entertaining 2-2 draw in regulation time. The match was subsequently decided by a penalty shootout, with the EU prevailing 5-4 to complete a clean sweep of the day’s sporting events.
Montserrado County Senator Saah Joseph featured prominently for the Government of Liberia football side, adding valuable experience and excitement to the encounter as enthusiastic spectators cheered both teams from the grandstands.
Organizers stated that the friendly sporting matches were intended to strengthen ties between Liberia and the European Union, utilizing sports as a platform to promote friendship, cooperation, and mutual respect.
Broader Europe Day Activities
The sporting events form part of a comprehensive series of engagements leading up to May 9, which marks the 76th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration the historic foundation of the European Union.
According to the EU delegation in Monrovia, this year’s commemoration in Liberia will feature a diverse lineup of activities, including academic engagements, media interactions, and community outreach initiatives.
Planned events include guest lectures at the Gabriel L. Dennis Foreign Service Institute and the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Liberia.
The sessions are specifically designed to foster dialogue between young Liberians and European representatives.
The outreach component will extend to the Gray D. Allison High School and the B.W. Payne Elementary School, alongside scheduled radio appearances by EU ambassadors and interactive town hall-style sessions with university students.
The celebrations will culminate in an official Europe Day Reception, bringing together government officials, civil society organizations, and international stakeholders to highlight shared values, partnership, and continued collaboration between Liberia and the European Union.
