Liberia: LBDI Renews Commitment Towards Liberia’s Economic Transformation, Celebrates Diamond Jubilee In Banking Sector

Monrovia – For over six decades, the Liberia Bank for Development (LBDI) has navigated the turbulent waters of political upheavals, economic crises, civil conflicts, and global challenges, including the Ebola  epidemic and the COVID-19 pandemic, yet continues to lead the charge of Liberia’s financial banking sector.

Founded in 1965, LBDI is this week celebrating its diamond jubilee (60th anniversary) under the theme: “From Challenge to Triumph: The Journey of Renewal” in grand style with several activities lined up to touch the lives of ordinary Liberians and expand its visibility across all sectors.

In a powerful message delivered by President and CEO, Dr. Dr. Christian N. Allison, recommitted the bank’s renewed vigor to driving Liberia’s economic renewal and transformation.

In recognition that Liberia stands at a pivotal moment, emerging from recent global challenges and poised for accelerated growth, the Liberian financial expert intoned that LBDI is committed to being at the forefront of this renewal, financing innovative projects that will shape the nation’s economic future.

Though the bank has gone through different hurdles that have the propensity to cause lasting insolvency to any financial institution, Dr. Allison bragged that each of these challenges has only tested the bank’s resolve and has emerged stronger, more determined, and better equipped to serve our nation.

Through periods of uncertainty, when other institutions faltered, he recalled that LBDI remained steadfast, continuing to provide essential financial services and supporting the economic activities that kept hope alive.

“Our strategic priorities for the next decade are ambitious yet achievable. We will continue to leverage technology to enhance financial inclusion, recognizing that digital financial services can reach communities that traditional banking models cannot. Through mobile money partnerships, agency banking, and innovative digital products, we will bring banking services to every corner of Liberia,” said the head of LBDI.

Looking at the future ahead, he vowed LBDI’s readiness to strengthen partnerships with international financial institutions, development agencies, and technology providers to bring world-class solutions to Liberian customers while building local capacity and expertise.

“We are particularly focused on supporting Liberia’s post-pandemic economic recovery. The COVID-19 pandemic tested our resilience as a nation and as an institution, but it also revealed opportunities for transformation.”

“Our history is interwoven with Liberia’s own story of perseverance. We have witnessed the nation’s darkest hours and its brightest moments of renewal. Throughout it all, LBDI has been more than a bank—we have been a partner in nation-building, a supporter of dreams, and a catalyst for economic transformation. This legacy of resilience forms the foundation upon which we build our future.”

He pointed out that LBDI’s remarkable transformation from a single-branch development bank to a dynamic network of 15 branches spanning seven counties exemplifies its unwavering commitment to accessibility and service excellence.

This expansion, he noted, was not driven merely by ambition, but by a deep understanding that economic development requires financial services to be within reach of every Liberian, whether in Monrovia or in rural communities.

“Our strategic evolution has taken us far beyond our original mandate of development finance. Today, LBDI proudly offers comprehensive commercial banking services while maintaining our core mission of supporting development. We have become the financial partner of choice for small and medium enterprises—the engines of job creation and innovation. Our specialized financing programs support agriculture, helping farmers increase productivity and access markets. We back tourism ventures that showcase Liberia’s natural beauty and cultural richness. We finance industrial projects that create employment and drive economic diversification.”

Dr. Allison indicated that the bank’s investment in modern technology represents a cornerstone of its transformation strategy – recognizing that in today’s interconnected world, banking must be convenient, secure, and efficient.

“Our mobile banking platform brings financial services to customers’ fingertips, enabling transactions, account management, and financial planning from anywhere in Liberia. This technological leap has been complemented by comprehensive staff training programs, ensuring that our team possesses the skills and knowledge to deliver world-class banking solutions tailored to Liberia’s unique economic landscape and cultural context,” he furthered.

“The triumph of our transformation is measured not just in branches opened or systems deployed, but in the tangible impact on Liberian lives. Every loan that helps a small business expand, every account that enables savings for a child’s education, every transaction that facilitates commerce—these are the true markers of our success.”

Due to the demand of service needed for customers and in consonance with the changing world, Dr. Allison revealed how the bank had to transform from a development bank into a comprehensive financial institution without losing sight of its development mission.
