Held over three days in Washington, D.C., the conference brought together Liberians from across the globe to discuss strategies for national growth and to engage as key stakeholders in shaping the country’s future.

The recommendations crafted during the conference sessions will be further developed into meaningful policies by the Liberian Diaspora Office, with the goal of contributing to Liberia’s long-term growth and development.

Expressing a strong desire to return home and make a tangible impact, diaspora Liberians passionately highlighted their commitment to contributing to Liberia’s progress.

In a proactive move, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai proposed the establishment of a Diaspora Commission—a step aimed at formalizing diaspora engagement and accelerating national development initiatives.

“The government recognizes the vital contributions of diaspora Liberians. Now is the time for action—action that will move Liberia forward,” President Boakai said. He emphasized the need for Liberians abroad to transform remittances into investments in infrastructure, job creation, and youth empowerment.

Describing the conference as a successful event, President Boakai reiterated the importance of empowering fellow Liberians: “Diaspora Liberians must teach their kinsmen how to fish, not just give them fish.”

During a well-attended Presidential Townhall Meeting, President Boakai commended the U.S. government for providing opportunities that empower Liberians in various sectors, noting the longstanding partnership between Liberia and the United States.

Responding to questions from diaspora attendees, the Liberian leader assured them that Liberia is open and ready for business, encouraging them to bring back investment, expertise, and skills to support national development. He reminded attendees that Liberians themselves are key to developing their country.

President Boakai also praised a significant initiative by diaspora Liberian Eva Uboti-Wallace, who pledged $3 million for infrastructure projects in her hometown in Grand Gedeh County. The President assured her that the government will work to improve roads and support the timely implementation of her development projects.

The 2025 Liberia Diaspora Conference, held under the theme “Building the Future Together: Reconciliation, National Healing, Growth and Prosperity,” concluded in style, marking the first edition of what organizers expect to become an annual tradition.

Erasmus Williams, head of the Diaspora Office, said the dozens of recommendations will be reviewed at the Second Annual Liberia Diaspora Return Ceremony in December 2025. He urged diaspora Liberians to return home in mass to continue engagement and contribute meaningfully to Liberia’s development. Williams also thanked stakeholders for their support and expressed optimism for continued collaboration to achieve the conference’s objectives.
