Washington, USA – The United States Government has commended the Liberian Government for its commitment to democracy and freedom of expression in Liberia.
The US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said Liberia, a post conflict country, is a shining example of what commitment to good governance and determination to make progress can do.
The US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs made the commendation recently when she met with Vice President Joseph N. Boakai, in Washington DC, the US Capital.
Thomas-Greenfield, who once served as US Ambassador to Liberia, said the eyes of the international community were on Liberia as it prepared for elections next year.
She said the conduct of peaceful elections will enhance the stability of the country and its unrelenting progress will be furthered.
The Assistant Secretary of State then pledged the US Government’s commitment and backing to the security sector and urged Liberians to take ownership of their country’s progress.
She stressed the specific focus of her Government to buttressing efforts of the Liberian Government to enhance the image and operations of the Liberia National Police and other security outfits.
Responding, Vice President Boakai thanked the US for its support to Liberia over the years and for its assistance to the country’s growth and prosperity.
VP Boakai assured the US Government and the international community of the resolve of Liberians to take their country forward and to continue building the country’s fledgling democracy.
VP Boakai recalled some of the tremendous progress Liberia has made under the leadership of the Unity Party led government.
He spoke of the building of roads, the strengthening of our security in readiness for UNMIL’s departure, freedom of expression, as well as other infrastructural development in health and education.
He said Liberians had a right to be displeased with where we find ourselves after nearly 170 years after of independence.
He however said he was confident that with hard work, determination, and patriotism, Liberians will be able to build a prosperous nation.
Meanwhile, Vice President Boakai has also held separate meetings with dozens of business people and potential inventors who have been considering investment opportunities in Liberia.
The Vice President is assuring the business men and women that Liberia has an excellent investment climate with a citizenry that is ready, willing and prepared to work.
