A Flag Day Message

As we celebrate Liberia’s 179th National Flag Day, we must remember that our flag is more than a piece of cloth raised above public buildings, schools, homes, and institutions. It is a visible symbol of our shared identity, history, struggles, sacrifices, values, and hopes. Its single white star reminds us that, despite our different counties, ethnic groups, religions, political parties, and social positions, we belong to one Republic. The flag represents our collective dignity and our determination to build a peaceful, united, and prosperous nation.
At a deeper level, the flag creates a sense of belonging. It reminds every Liberian that we are part of something greater than ourselves. When it is raised, it should inspire national pride, unity, service, and responsibility. When it is lowered, it can express mourning and respect. Therefore, honoring the flag does not simply mean standing at attention or saluting it during a ceremony. It means honoring the people, principles, and national aspirations for which it stands.
We declare: “I pledge allegiance to the flag of Liberia and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
These are not empty words to be recited and forgotten. A pledge is a solemn promise, while allegiance is loyalty demonstrated through conduct. When we pledge allegiance to the Liberian flag, we promise loyalty not merely to a national symbol, but to Liberia, its people, its Constitution, and the Republic the flag represents. We promise to protect our unity, defend liberty, uphold justice, and place the national interest above personal, political, ethnic, religious, and regional divisions.
The importance of this pledge must be demonstrated through our everyday duties. The citizen who sweeps the front of a home, business, office, or street is serving Liberia. The person who properly disposes of waste, protects public property, obeys traffic regulations, pays legitimate taxes and fees, and refuses to pollute the environment is honoring the flag. Parents who send their children to school, teachers who teach honestly, students who study diligently, and businesspeople who deal fairly are all fulfilling their allegiance to the Republic.
The same standard applies to those entrusted with greater responsibilities. A police officer who protects citizens without demanding a bribe honors the flag. A civil servant who reports to work on time and serves the public faithfully honors the flag. A legislator who places the national interest above personal benefit honors the flag. A judge who dispenses justice without fear or favor honors the flag. A minister or a director who properly manages public resources honors the flag. And a President who leads with integrity, protects the Constitution, and serves all Liberians, regardless of political affiliation, demonstrates the highest responsibilities of allegiance.
No office is too small and no position is too powerful to be exempt from the pledge. From the person sweeping a community road to the President occupying the nation’s highest office, every Liberian has a duty to the Republic. Leadership does not reduce this obligation; it increases it. The greater the authority entrusted to us, the greater our responsibility to uphold liberty, justice, unity, and accountability.
“Liberty and justice for all” must also become a living national commitment. Liberty cannot be reserved for the powerful, and justice cannot be available only to those who can afford it. If one Liberian is denied justice because of poverty, ethnicity, gender, disability, political opinion, or social status, then the promise represented by our flag remains incomplete. Allegiance requires us to speak against injustice, corruption, discrimination, violence, and the misuse of public authority, even when doing so is difficult.
On this Flag Day, I call upon Liberians to hold one another accountable to the true meaning of the flag and the pledge. This accountability should not be driven by hostility or partisan politics, but by love for country. We must respectfully remind our relatives, neighbors, coworkers, community leaders, and public officials that every decision must strengthen rather than weaken the Republic.
Let us not honor the flag only with our voices while dishonoring it through our actions. Let us demonstrate our allegiance through honesty, hard work, environmental responsibility, peaceful citizenship, compassion, justice, and service. May the Liberian flag forever unite us as one people, and may our daily conduct prove that we truly believe in one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
